Andrew Killick
The potter and craftsman behind Silenzio Pottery.
Learning the craft has taken years. No stranger to the potter’s wheel, Andrew comes from a family background rich with experience and expertise. Andrews parents are well known New Zealand potters specialising in domestic wood fired pottery. They were in business for 33 years and passed on their knowledge and skills to Andrew.
An early memory of Andrews was going to sleep to the rhythmic sound of the kick wheels in the studio next door as his parents worked late into the night, honing their craft. Andrew joined them full time in his mid 20's, eventually establishing his own pottery business in Auckland and later, Laughing Pottery in Waihi.
In 2022 Andrew was pulled to move to Oamaru where Silenzio Pottery was born. Each piece of Silenzio pottery is individually thrown and the pottery has the makers mark stamped into it so you can be assured of the quality.
“Pottery for me is a creative listening art. The clay forms and speaks in my hands, teaching me as I go. It’s a tactile art form that allows me to flow with creativity while adhering to simple architect and design principles. These hand-crafted pieces take time to emerge, often crafted, glazed and fired many times over before it reaches completion.”
“My work is a great balance of quality and art; it is the expression of the pure, simple imperfection of handmade pottery.”
